Every computer user must have faced problems of virus attack at least once while using their computer. Most of us are the victims of security breach of our home computer. These breaches happen before we become aware of it. You will be astonished to know that your computer might be under threat while you are browsing the Internet everyday.

This article will list out the most common causes of security breach of home computer and also look at the different ways these threats can be avoided and your computer could be protected against such attacks.

Let us first discuss regarding most common and wide spread Internet security threats faced by home computer users. They are viruses, Trojans, and spyware/ adware. A few details regarding them are described below:

Viruses

Viruses are malicious software programs. The only purpose of these programs is to annoy the computer user or to cause data loss. These programs generally exploit some weakness or bug in the operating system and they spread rapidly by getting attached with executable files. The damage caused by these viruses could be low (only annoying the user by slowing down the performance of the computer) to severe (causing data loss).

Trojans

Like viruses, trojans also spread utilizing some weakness of the operating system. But, they have more precise purpose apart from annoyance and data loss. Trojans could be used to gather some specific data like the personal bank account details and then sending it to a specific destination.

Spyware / Adware

People are generally confused between these two because the structure of spyware and adware are almost similar. The difference between them lies in the way they work. Security providers for home computers are concentrating more and more on combating these two threats. Spyware is generally used to send information to the destination regarding the way the computer is being used, what websites are being visited on a regular basis and many other information. This could be considered mainly as a privacy breach and more as a nuisance than a threat. Adware is on the other hand is used simply for advertising purpose.

For an example an adware could change the browser’s homepage to that of a company for which the adware was developed. This will cause a display of a pop-up screen displaying the advertisement of the company on a regular basis.

To combat all these security threats to the computer, a lot of products have been developed. They include anti virus program against viruses, anti spyware/ anti adware programs to combat spywares, adwares and Trojans, firewalls against attacks made by hackers, Trojans, adware, spyware and viruses.

These security software are available free of cost on the Internet. But, to obtain complete security professional security software is available on payment from companies like Symantec Corporation and Norton Anti-Virus program.
